Jinger Duggar Vuolo has spoken candidly about growing up under the "harmful" teachings of the disgraced minister Bill Gothard.
The TV personality shared that "fear was a huge part" of her childhood due to the teachings.
"The fear kept me crippled with anxiety. I was terrified of the outside world," she said.
Vuolo finally broke free through her brother-in-law and his family, who helped change her religious views.
The actress has penned a memoir about her journey to freedom, hoping it will help others like her.
"I want to share my story, and maybe it will help even just one person to be freed," Vuolo referenced her new book Becoming Free Indeed.
She described her journey as "emotionally exhausting" but "the best thing" she has ever done.
Vuolo's parents still follow some of Gothard's doctrines.
They have released several statements in the past to support their choice.
